ROYAL TRUCKING EXPERIENCES SIGNIFICANT FUEL ECONOMY GAINS WITH PROSTAR
Billy Milican, President of Royal Trucking Company, founded the company with his father in 1968. “Like everybody else, we started with one truck,” says Milican of the company’s humble origins. “More of our expansion came after 1990. We had about 30 trucks then.” Now, just 24 years later, they have 160 vehicles and 220 employees.
Based in West Point, Miss., the company service spans the 48 contiguous U.S. states, as well as most Canadian provinces, providing dry van, flat bed and logistics services.
It was in 2003, during the company’s vast expansion, when they decided to start integrating International® trucks into their fleet, and began working with their local dealership, Waters Truck and Tractor. George Hern, fleet sales manager for Waters Truck and Tractor, has worked over the past decade to provide Milican’s company the best dealership service possible. “I came in and basically asked for an opportunity to try and demonstrate what the International product and our service could do to benefit his business,” Hern recalls of the start of their relationship.
Since then, the two companies have worked together to expand and improve Royal Trucking’s service across the U.S. One of the biggest assets for Milican and his company has been the addition of the ProStar® to his fleet. Since first running the ProStar with the MaxxForce® 13 engine in 2011, his fleet makeup is now over 87% ProStar, with 140 units.
And while the ProStar with MaxxForce 13 has provided Royal Trucking with reliable service, Milican is even more excited by the N13 engine, of which he has 30 units currently. “So far we haven’t had any mechanical problems with the N13 engine,” Milican says. “The drivers have noticed a marked difference in performance and response.” Since receiving the trucks, he’s put upwards of 114,000 miles on some of the units without any issue.
Fuel economy improvements have been impressive with the N13 as well. “Our fuel mileage has increased by 4%,” Milican says. “That’s a comparison of the 2012 and 2013 MY MaxxForce-powered trucks to the 2014 MY trucks with N13.” Milican’s figures take into account the cost of the use of diesel exhaust fluid.
The drivers at Royal Trucking can also attest to the comfort of the cab when out on the job. “They have plenty of room, and offer enough space in the cabs for two people,” Milican notes. Because Royal Trucking has trainee teams that send seasoned teachers out with new drivers, the roomy cab is more than just an added bonus; it is an essential for his crew.
With such a vast area of service, it’s important to Milican that he has the support he needs, both locally and when his drivers are out on the roads. “There are a lot of International dealers throughout the country,” says Milican. “Navistar always steps up to the plate if service needs occur.”
For Royal Trucking, on-time pickup and delivery are the keys to keeping customers happy. “Dependability is important for both customer service and driver retention,” says Milican. “At Waters Truck and Tractor, they’ve always gone the extra mile to help us make sure we are a successful company.”
In Milican’s eyes, the future holds nothing but more progress for his company, Navistar, and Waters Truck and Tractor. “I’m looking forward to the continued improvements International will make that will enhance mpg,” he says.
For Hern, taking care of Royal Trucking is a promise of continued service and support. “We’re in it with him,” Hern says. “Up or down, good, bad or ugly, we’re going to stand in the trenches with him and do what we need to do to stay afloat.”
